Imagine ONE Inner-City Community Holistically Transformed

The Two Faces of Miami

Watch Slide Show of Umoja Village

umoja village(from the swahili meaning unity) is a shantytown, squatters village located on a formerly vacant city lot on the corner of 62nd street and nw17th avenue in the liberty city section of miami. in november, after years of broken promises from the miami housing authority to build low rent housing, some 50 people occupied this site and constructed the village.

Imagine a marginalized community of Miami one day looking like this: nice homes, beautiful landscaping, kids playing in the park, a few fortune 500 corporate and manufacturing buildings in the business district, churches packed, leaders meeting and working together, former gangsters and drug dealers mentoring youth. Imagine watching on the TV Networks like CNN a documentary on how a city of Miami went from absolute social and moral bankruptcy to being one of the most prestigious and productive cities of Florida as the people revolted against a poverty spirit and systemic dysfunctions.

Miami-Dade County as a whole is made of many small communities or cities (See map). Some of these communities, like Liberty City are deeply impoverished socially and spiritually. I believe if a few key churches and leaders mobilize citizens, business owners, political leaders, educators and neighboring suburban churches to help bring focused work with measurable change over a 10-15 year period the dream of an Urban Inner-City Being Transformed can be actualized. Some of this will happen with government help, but many of the change agents will be personal and business investors, non-profit agencies and community citizens and churches who are hungry for change. You know in your heart that an intensive, concentrated effort of resources, qualified people, accountability, cultural sensitivity, contextual methodologies, coupled with the maximizing favor, wisdom and power of God CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN! IT CAN HAPPEN! IT MUST HAPPEN!

If people don't have the potential and God is not willing then Hebrew 11, Acts 2-4, Ninevite Revival, The Armenian Revivals of the 2nd-3rd Century, The Great American Awakening, The Jesus Movement are all amazing works that God did in the past on a communal level, but is not willing and capable of doing today. I don't believe that and I think neither do you!

Only with good works can we as Christians gain the credibility to persuasively talk about the power of the Gospel (Romans 1:16) in a sceptical and hopeless community. These efforts would include, but not be limited to the following end result goals:

  • Local churches growing as people are evangelized and nurtured in existing and newly planted Christian communities.

  • Crime levels significantly dropping as citizens, law enforcement, and organizations strategize and work together.

  • Gang involvement dropping as their energy is used for more constructive  endeavors (work, art, sports, social work, school, etc).

  • Student test scores increasing (adopt a school), drop-out rates declining and more minorities completing college while reinvesting their talents back into the inner-city.

  • Property values raised through housing and neighborhood construction and re-development (adopt a block).

  • Youth after school mischief\crimes decreasing as they find themselves active in culturally relevant after school activities sponsored by many sources (hip hop arts, academic training & tutoring, sports, christian rehabilitation classes, vocational training, paid internships, etc).

  • Redevelopment of business districts and an increase of business investments as neighborhoods become safer and qualified workers relocate into affordable urban housing.

  • Families being more intact and unwed pregnancy levels and abortions dropping.

  • Less demand and supply of drugs as citizens apply a holistic approach such as exposing drug dealers, better law enforcement, establishing recovery programs, and more aggressive adolescence prevention education while integrating people into new spiritual communities so they can receive daily encouragement, accountability and Spiritual Rebirth & Power.

Please pray for us (Hakimian family) as the vision becomes more clear and we make contact with the right people who have a similar mission and are already engaged in the harvest to some degree. I will update you on the progress in time.
