THE COLLAPSE OF WALL STREET: Why It Happened? How Churches Played A Role?
Firstly, the greed of many corporations has dug a practical hole for themselves. You cannot sell milk to people that cost $1.00 for $10.00 without expecting some kind of negative consequence.
Proverbs 29:4
4 By justice a king gives a country stability,
but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down.
4 By justice a king gives a country stability,
but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down.
Psalms 7:15-16
15 He who digs a hole and scoops it out
falls into the pit he has made.
16 The trouble he causes recoils on himself.....
15 He who digs a hole and scoops it out
falls into the pit he has made.
16 The trouble he causes recoils on himself.....
Of course peopel can't pay thier mortgage payments. They were bamboozled into loans they could not afford. Couple that with the fact that national wages have not increased in proportion to inflation. Yet CEO's & CFO's keep getting higher pay while the profits of major companies keep increasing. Yet only a small percentage of people enjoy this wealth. What is wrong with this picture? The economic gap between the rich and poor keeps increasing.
Proverbs 14:31
31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker,
but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
Factor that into the reality that some pastors brag about expensive minsitry jets, board members give CEO's million dollar severance packages and politicians take bribes from corporate lobbyist who are trying to get some bill passed. The greed of American leaders is catching up with them. When the storms come due to their lack of obedience to Jesus' principles (assuming Jesus has something to say about money matters) what else can we expect, except for an economic fall, collapse, downturn, or whatever else you want to call it!
Matthew 7:26-27
26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 Th rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 Th rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
Secondly, God is outraged by the greed of our country. This issue comes down to the moral responsibility people feel to be "economically just". Since capitalism teaches us it's about the "bottom line" and not the "person at the bottom" many people including believers have fallen into this financial philosophy.
Have you ever had a conversation with a Christian entrepreneur? Next time you do ask them how much profit they take home in comparison to their top employee (s). They will either not answer the question, feel your question is inappropriate, or rationalize their philosophy of economics based on the competiveness of the market. Market principles over Christian principles. Yet these people serve on elder boards and are happy go lucky members of many churches. Don't expect the pastor and the treasurer to make them feel uncomfortable about their econmoic explotations. The Prophet Jesus would have! Our churches are more business insitutions then prophetic communites of worship.
But again we do send money to third world missionary and humanitarian agencies, so get off our back, Jack! Well I think economic justice means much more then sending some money to an orphanage or church that is doing grass roots work in an impoverished city. Rather it is being involved in the more dangerous work of bringing systemic change and regulation of corporate executives by world governments on a national and local level. Local churches and community members have to take this responsibility of bringing trasnformation to their perticular goverments and consciences of the common people.

If government does not regulate to some degree, who else is going to make sure that people act justly in all aspects of society (Romans 13:1-4). God is clearly upset about American corporate greed and governmental aloofness (what do you expect from those economically stable politicians). He will surely judge our infrastructure and cause us to be the "tail" instead of the "head".
Deuteronomy 28:43-44
The alien who lives among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. 44 He will lend to you, but you will not lend to him. He will be the head, but you will be the tail. (cause of their poverty would be in response to how they treated Yahweh and the powerless & poor of society)

- The tithes of the Old testament were established not just for the church and it's administrative needs, but the needs of the poor in their community:
Deuteronomy 14:28-29
... the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

- Notice how God loves the powerless and poor and calls "believers"to help them due to His salvation in thier lives:
Deuteronomy 10:16-19
17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. 18 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing. 19 And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt.

Deut 24:17-22
17 Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge. 18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this. 19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow. 21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow. 22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this.

Ultimately God calls the church "cursed" when we don't employ ourselves in making sure society is taking care of the poor and powerless. You know those "WallMart" workers with no health insurance as WallMart makes billions in profit.
Deut 27:19
19 "Cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien, the fatherless or the widow."
Then all the people shall say, "Amen!"

The biggest blame to this problem is the body of Christ in America. We apathetically sit by as all this corporate greed happens and vocational injustices take place in our midst amongst immigrants, the lower and middle class. We teach people the importance of prayer, Bible study and fellowship. Never dealing with how this empowerment and education of truth should equip us as a prophetic community to pervade, like leaven all aspects of society and bring God's social order; better known as "Kingdom Presence & Principles".
Today's church leaders, and I say some of them are like the false prophets of the Old Testament. Those prophets knew what the "Mosaic Covenant" declared about economics, truth, justice and social responsibility for the weak and how God would judge them through other wicked nations. We emphasize orthodoxy over orthopraxy! How do i know that? When was the last time your church community practiced discipline on a "hardened sinning" Christian. Probably never becuase in the final analysis we are all talk, but no action. We talk about "holiness" in theory.
The false prophets instead of calling people to repentance declared, "God is going to bless us because He loves us and has established an eternal covenant with us" (as if the covenant was not conditional). Long as you keep sacrificing and tithing in the temple (hmm!, I wonder why the temple tithe was so important!). All that mattered was the up-keeping of ecclesiastical matters.Much like our modern day evangelical, pentecostal, protestant pastors. I think we make God sick!
In actuality they were telling the people that the institution of the "temple" would protect them long as they attended to it's needs (church centered rather then christ centered). It did not matter what was going on in the wider society and how they were to be "salt" and "light". Look at these powerful words written by the prophet Jeremiah:
Jeremiah 7:2-8
"'Hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the LORD. 3 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place. 4 Do not trust in deceptive words and say, "This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD!" 5 If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, 6 if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, 7 then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your forefathers for ever and ever. 8 But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.

Where is the church in its action of calling corporate executives, greedy Word Faith teachers, and politicians to repentance. Why aren't we being specific like John the Baptist about what each person can do in their perticular field to better honor God.
The church gathers every Sunday like fat overweight children eating their chocolate cakes and cream sodas, wondering why they feel and look so pathetic. The church is filled with socially ignorant worshippers who have made religion, like Karl Marx said, "the opiate of their souls".
All their leaders care about is looking better then other churches, numeric growth and financial security. Yet look at what God declared about the false prophets who were supposed to be exposing the problems of their society and calling people to heed God's ethical system:
Jeremiah 8:10-11
10 Therefore I will give their wives to other men
and their fields to new owners.
From the least to the greatest,
all are greedy for gain;
prophets and priests alike,
all practice deceit.
11 They dress the wound of my people
as though it were not serious.
"Peace, peace," they say,
when there is no peace.
10 Therefore I will give their wives to other men
and their fields to new owners.
From the least to the greatest,
all are greedy for gain;
prophets and priests alike,
all practice deceit.
11 They dress the wound of my people
as though it were not serious.
"Peace, peace," they say,
when there is no peace.
Jeremiah 23:14
14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem
I have seen something horrible:
They commit adultery and live a lie.
They strengthen the hands of evildoers,
so that no one turns from his wickedness.
They are all like Sodom to me;
the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.
14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem
I have seen something horrible:
They commit adultery and live a lie.
They strengthen the hands of evildoers,
so that no one turns from his wickedness.
They are all like Sodom to me;
the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.
I believe based on an analysis of scripture that Christians on all levels are a "big part" of the problem as to why we are financially cursed at this moment in America. We put so much emphasis on "church growth" and "personal financial prosperity" thru tithing, rather then just doing the will of God in all aspects of life (i.e. church, community, family, government, etc) despite the results of poverty, persecution, isolation, and death (Hebrews 11:35-40). Doing the will of God as a new prophetic community (Acts 2:17-21) means speaking the truth in love about God's covenant blessings and conditions.
Look at the example of Old Testament prophet Micah:
Micah 6:7-8
7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
Look at the example of the New Testament Apostle James;
James 5:1-6
5:1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you.
Look at the Apostles request that Paul not forget about the lower class demographic (try emphasizing that in our churches):5:1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4 Look! Galatians 2:9-10
They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
Look at the example of Jesus our Lord who is the ultimate Prophet, Priest and King:
Luke 4:18
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
Luke 6:20-21
20 Looking at his disciples, he said:
"Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

Luke 6:20-21
20 Looking at his disciples, he said:
"Blessed are you who are poor,

21 Blessed are you who hunger now,

Luke 7:22-23
22 So he replied to the messengers, "Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. 23 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."
Luke 11:39-42
39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give what is inside [the dish] to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
42 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You foolish people! 42 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
Who are we depending on to be that clear voice of econmic justice in these troubled times. Don't look to your institutional church. They have potlucks, camping trips, promotional campaigns, spiritually sick congregation gatherings, administrative meetings, birthday parties, and picnics to worry about. Since they only have 1 pastor to every 100 members how can they expect their parishioners to be engaged in these issues. Their still babes in Christ, which isnot a complement!
Hebrews 5:12-14
You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

The local and national church is part of the problem for our financial crisis. They think it's not their job to be a voice on a local and national level concerning issues of "just economics". Rather they would like for us to just focus on the disciplines of prayer, daily bible reading, bringing your friend to church and tithing. Yeah this is the way of the MASTER! Yeah this is the power of CHRISTIANITY IN YOUR COMMUNITY!
What are your thoughts concerning this issue?
